CCDEVCOM Secure Lab Renovation

Project Description

The project involved installing exhaust for the nitrogen glove box in room Z2A24 known as secure room. This type of glove box was designed to contain a high purity inert atmosphere (e.g. argon or nitrogen). Inert atmosphere glove boxes are usually kept at a pressure slightly higher than the surrounding air, so that any small leaks would be inert gas or any particulate matters leaking outward instead of air leaking inward in which chemical work is to be done at laboratory-scale. Matos reviewed project requirements with Facilities Services, ARL Safety and stakeholders in the construction process to ensure appropriate engineering and administrative controls were put in place to meet minimum requirements for providing adequate exhaust ventilation and outside air on operations which had the potential for generating hazardous dust, fumes, mist, vapors, or gases. Adequate exhaust ventilation was required to protect employee health.Mechanical scope of work included furnishing and installing a canopy hood over the nitrogen glove box.  Matos provided and installed 12” diameter, corrosive exhaust ductwork connecting the collar on the canopy hood to the nearby 20-inch diameter corrosive main. Matos provided supply air from AH 2-7 into room Z2A-24. This work included providing and installing a VAV box, a supply diffuser in the ceiling, and ductwork from the supply main of AH 2-7 to the supply diffuser.  TU 27-12 had a maximum and minimum airflow setpoint of 330 cubic feet per minute (cfm).  TU 27-12 had a hot water reheat coil with a capacity of 5,300 British thermal units per hour (0.5 gallons per minute).  Matos provided and installed ½ inch diameter piping (both supply and return) from the nearest chilled water main to the reheat coil. Matos provided and installed controls, including the HVAC device being fully integrated with the existing Utility and Control Monitoring System (UCMS) on post which was a Niagara AX Framework server. Matos performed extensive testing and balancing of the mechanical systems. Provided and installed a space differential pressure sensor between room Z2A-24 and corridor Z2A-08. Electrical scope of work included electrical modifications associated with the new mechanical work including providing power to the new VAV box, and power to the new control devices.
